Stefania Milan
Professor Stefania Milan is professor of critical data studies at the Department of Media Studies, University of Amsterdam. She is known for her research on the interplay between digital and data-driven technologies and political participation and governance. Her work is funded by the Dutch Research Council and the European Research Council and she is an ERC Advanced grant laureate. In 2017, Stefania founded the Big Data from the South Research Initiative, investigating the impact of datafication and surveillance on communities in the Global South. Among her many published works, her book Social Movements and their Technologies broke new ground in the study of digital data and political movement and action. Stefania will lead the University of Amsterdam collaboration in the Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life, convening the research cluster on Publics.
