Nelly Bencomo
Dr Nelly Bencomo is Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Durham University, UK. Nelly’s research focuses on the interdisciplinary aspects of software engineering, spanning the technical and human elements of distributed and autonomous systems. She has broken new ground with a Leverhulme Fellowship on the study of uncertainty and Bayesian surprises in software systems, leading the EPSRC Twenty20Insight project that explicitly addresses the human impact of systems that are, by necessity, incompletely understood or explainable. Nelly’s work has practical impact on AI tools for decision-making and for the use of digital twins for net zero. Nelly is the computer science project lead for the Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life and she is the computer science lead for the Centre’s thematic programme on Being Human.
