Nancy Cartwright
Professor Nancy Cartwright is Professor of Philosophy at Durham University, UK and Distinguished Professor at the University of California, San Diego. She is a world-leading philosopher of science, specialising in philosophy of physics and the philosophy and methodology of economics. Nancy has worked extensively in modelling, causal inference, causal powers, and objectivity, evidence, especially for evidence-based policy and the philosophy of social technology. Among her many books, A Philosopher Looks at Science (Cambridge University Press, 2022) proposes a new approach to the relationship between scientific institutions and human social change. Her recent work on Knowledge for Use investigates how to use scientific research results for better policy-making in education, child protection and international development. Nancy Cartwright is the Associate Director for Knowledge Exchange in the Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life. She is Fellow of the British Academy and the Academy of Social Sciences, member of the American Philosophy Society, the German Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of a MacArthur fellowship.
