Jenny Moran

Dr Jenny Carla Moran joins LCAL as a researcher and teacher in the area of multidisciplinary gender studies. Her research is concerned with fetishised forms of love for “Artificial Intelligence,” wherein products of the tech industry become loved as solutions to all woes, as Gods, as proxy children, or as romantic companions.

Examining the politics of love under coloniality in her work, Jenny is particularly concerned by the ways in which love for AI centres the commodity and invisibilises the living beings made to pay the cost of its production. She began exploring love for AI during her PhD studies at the University of Cambridge, where she was a recipient of an AHRC Studentship, a Cambridge Trust European Scholarship, and a Cambridge Mellon-Sawyer Graduate Dissertation Fellowship. The love for AI has only gotten more prevalent in recent years, so the problem continues to inform her first book, forthcoming for worldwide publication with Haymarket in 2027. Her work in this area has also been platformed by the Journal of Gender Studies, Configurations, and Theory, Culture & Society.

Prior to joining LCAL, Dr Moran lectured and supervised in Multidisciplinary Gender Studies at Cambridge for two years. She was then successful in winning a Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Research Fellowship housed in Trinity College Dublin, where she worked on her book manuscript and hosted the first Gender and AI Symposium at the university. She remains a Faculty Member of the Joint TCD-TU Dublin Centre for the Sociology of Humans and Machines (SOHAM), where she co-supervises a PhD student exploring the gendering of language in LLMs’ outputs.
